Your First Bite of Dining in Plain Sight: What to Expect from Our Unique Outdoor Dining Experience

There’s outdoor dining. And then there’s this.

Nothing quite prepares you for the feeling of walking through trees, wildflowers or open fields, and arriving at a glowing glass marquee. It is gently lit from within, with fire and food at the heart of it all. There’s no clatter of cutlery echoing through a high-ceilinged hall. Just crisp air, soft light, and a table that mirrors the land it’s sitting on.

You’re probably curious about what to expect, so here’s your lowdown on our beautifully unique outdoor fine dining event.

The Setting Comes First

We choose our events to reflect the season. The space is a prism, and through it you see, feel, smell, and taste the place you’re in. It could be a lakeside view in Wiltshire as spring starts to stretch its legs,  or a heady summer evening on a flower farm in the Test Valley, scents and soft skies.

The location changes with the calendar, but every edition of our seasonal pop-up restaurant is rooted in the same promise: food, fire, and the freedom to eat outdoors without compromise.

Getting there feels like an arrival in so many ways.

You might park in a field or by a quiet track, so it’s best to leave the stilettos at home. Lean into the mood of the evening, and bring comfortable shoes and an extra layer; they’re going to be your best friends. It’s smart without the stiffness, and thoughtful without the fuss.

How It Works

Only four editions of our outdoor dining experience run per year: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each one is hosted in a different location, which is chosen for its connection to the season. With just a handful of places each night, booking is essential. The best way to hear about dates is to sign up for our VIP Guest List. That way, you’re always first in line.

First, a note on the chef.

James Whetlor has been putting fire at the heart of food for years. His background at River Cottage and his work with Cabrito have earned him awards and acclaim, but this project is all about stripping it back. Sourcing close to home, cooking out in the open, and letting the season do the talking.

You might spot him plating up. You might chat to him over your main. He’s not tucked away backstage; he’s part of the show.

The Welcome

You’ll be greeted as you walk in with a chilled English sparkling wine, sourced from a nearby vineyard. It’s partnered with three delicious canapés that set the tone for the meal to come.

The drink list has been kept exclusive. It’s there to complement what’s cooking, not crowd it. A sommelier will walk you through the seasonal picks and help you match each course with something that’s perfectly considered. The care taken in every choice is part of what makes the Dining in Plain Sight experience such a unique place to eat.

The Food and the Feeling

The menu isn’t sent out in advance, and that’s no accident. It’s built on what’s good right now. If the fisherman had a lucky morning, that might make its way to the grill. If a nearby grower’s got a glut of golden beetroot or blackberries, expect to see it on your plate.

At the centre of the marquee, flames flicker as James takes his place at the grill.

There’s no kitchen door to hide behind; he’s right there, working the fire. You’ll see your food being cooked and served, course by course.

Each dish tells a story that’s rich but simple.

Every bite will remind you why outdoor fine dining events like ours are something truly special. There’s something about flame and flavour, distance from the day-to-day, that makes everything feel a little more alive.

Why It Feels Different

This isn’t fine dining that’s been boxed up and dropped into a field. It’s not a field pretending to be a restaurant either. We’ve crafted our outdoor dining experience to sit somewhere in between. It’s real and raw, but always well-thought-out.

Our custom-built glass marquee protects you from the elements without ever shutting them out. Birds pass overhead. Wind stirs the hedgerows. But inside, you’re dry and warm in the winter, or cool and comfortable in the summer.

Everything’s been built to tread lightly. We use solar panels and biofuel, and an entirely unique ‘bring your own napkin’ request. It’s all about being in nature, not stamping on it.

Who You’ll Meet

It’s intimate by design. Numbers are kept low. You won’t find crowds or queues, and the table is shared. We believe that memories are made when strangers swap stories over something delicious.

The team will introduce you to the makers, growers, and gatherers behind your meal. Some might pop over to say hello. Others you’ll get to know through the menu. All of them are part of what makes this more than just a lovely evening out. It’s a full-circle food story with faces and names, not just labels.

And When It Ends?

After dessert, you’ll be offered a smoky rum or a local whisky. You’ll gather around the fire, this time not for cooking, just for comfort. The flames that cooked your food now warm your hands.

There’s no need to rush. Linger a while. Talk about your favourites. Stare at the stars. It’s all part of the night.

Come for the Fire, Stay for the Feeling

So what makes this more than just another dinner? It’s the mix of setting, ingredients, people, and flame. When you Dine in Plain Sight, you encounter a night that’s truly one-of-a-kind; led by nature, cooked over flames, and set under open skies.
